This past Tuesday, DAC hosted our “Sweet & Greet” event in the FHS Cafeteria. The event, which took place from 5-8 PM, was DAC’s kickoff event for the 2022-23 school year.

Especially with such a small minority population in our high school, the need for increased representation of people, stories, and events that focus on the diverse backgrounds in the Franklin community has never been greater. As the city continues to grow, so has my commitment to highlighting underappreciated aspects of Franklin so our diverse viewers can feel represented and connected with the content they are engaging in. Both through extra-curricular and school-based endeavors, I have been able to use my journalistic platform to build a welcoming community that promotes inclusivity and community involvement.

Through my 2022 summer internship with the Milford Daily News, I sought out leads in which I could educate my community on diverse topics they might not know are going on right in their backyard. This led me to the Random Smiles Organization and their annual wiffle ball tournament to raise thousands of dollars for the non-profit. In the attached article, I was able to highlight my community’s diverse socioeconomic standing that Random Smiles Project seeks to bring attention to. Not only was the article a great way for me to learn more about the charity and the work they are doing locally, but the write-up also added to the Milford Daily News’ traditional current news postings, further educating their viewers on local activities.

Similarly, I’ve been able to lead an inclusive community centered around local involvement through my high school’s publication, Pantherbook. As both a writer and editor, I’ve strived to demonstrate leadership in highlighting primarily student-based events where our 9th through 12th graders have demonstrated a willingness to welcome diversity into our school. Emphasizing diversity in the stories we publish has taught me the importance of making sure all 1,600+ students at Franklin High School are represented in our stories. I’ve attached my work in which I have committed to diversity as an editor, providing hands-on guidance for our highly qualified Diversity Awareness Club “DAC” President, Lily Eattimo. Working with Eattimo on multiple published articles on “DAC” related content this year, I have been proud to help bring awareness to the work the club is doing.
